3 Events That Can Cause a Marriage to End

Prenuptial and premarital agreements

Nobody ever wants to find a divorce lawyer, but there are times when people need the help of these family law attorneys to end a toxic part of their lives, and move on, some of which are far more frequent than others.

Here are just a few of the most common life events that can lead to a divorce.

Unemployment. According to an Ohio State University study from 2011, men who are unemployed are more likely to become divorced. Losing one’s job is excruciatingly difficult, creating stresses over money, security, and responsibilities. Sometimes, it can put too much of a load on the marriage, and break it.

Children. People often think having kids can save a marriage, but believe it or not, kids can actually end them, too. According to a study published in the Journal of Family Psychology, 67% of couples experienced a decrease in marital satisfaction within the first three years of a child’s birth. After all, raising children is a lot of responsibility. Though it can definitely be a joy, it can also put a huge strain on the marriage if both parties aren’t on board.

An Empty Nest. Just as having kids can cause a marriage to end, children growing up and leaving can cause a marriage to collapse. In 2013, more adults ages 50 and older were divorced rather than widowed for the first time, a number that continues to grow as seniors live longer, healthier lives.

Hopefully you’ll never need to worry about finding a divorce attorney, but that doesn’t mean you should stick with a toxic relationship. If you’re unhappy, get some counseling, or find the courage to leave. You’ll glad you did.

If you’re not sure if you should get divorced, consider counseling, or schedule a consultation with a divorce lawyer. If you know of any other reasons to seek out local family law attorneys, feel free to ask in the comments.
