20 Tips for Success in Law School


 

1. DO THE READING:

Don’t waste your time in other activities. Try to read whatever has been assigned to you in the course studies and do your reading on time. Besides, it is of paramount importance that when you read a subject, you must employ your due concentration on it. Unless you do not study in pin drop silence, you would never be able to get good command on any subject.

2. BRIEF THE CASES:

Try to pen down all legal facts of any case. Preparation of notes is supposed to be very necessary for comprehending the nature of a legal issue. Your case briefs should be brief and to the point.

3. REVIEW BEFORE EACH CLASS:

Before the beginning of your class, review your case briefs. This would help you to recall all the facts and figures and it is very important for healthy and smooth legal discussion in your class. It is better if your keep yourself updated about the case.

4. GO TO CLASS:

Most of the things are taught in the discussion not in the books. Hence, never miss your classes and try to be punctual in this regard. In case, if you miss 20% sessions, you would be awarded “FW” in your academic records and this will not removed from your certificates.

5. PAY ATTENTION IN CLASS:

Most of the students waste their time and money while surfing on the internet. You have paid money for the tuition; do you like to waste your money while playing games on computer or on internet?

6. PARTICIPATE IN CLASS:

Those students, who do not waste their time and actively participate in class learning, have bright chances of becoming a good attorney.

7. TAKE CLASS NOTES:

Review your class notes prior to beginning of any class discussion. State of preparedness is very necessary for good performance before mates and professors. Must analyze the cases you have been done with and do not forget to develop a good opinion while reading your upcoming assignments.

8. PREPARE AN OUTLINE FOR EACH OF YOUR CLASSES:

Must develop your course outlines in the most meaningful and professional manner. It is not necessary that all professors will teach you in similar fashion. Style of teaching varies person to person hence preparation of outline will help you to understand what things you have successfully read and what is yet to study.

9. CONSIDER FORMING A STUDY GROUP:

Try to form a study group for group discussions on your academic course. Most of the students waste their time in other activities after formation of their study groups. This should not be done by you. When you feel that you do not learn from group then resign from it and opt for another one. Your group should only discuss what you all classmates read not other issues.

10. REVIEW, REVIEW, REVIEW:

If you think that you are good crammer and you can secure good grades right before the finals then you are living in the fool’s paradise. Review your all sessions on time because this is not under graduate school.

11. ATTEND REVIEW SESSIONS CONDUCTED BY YOUR PROFESSORS AND/OR THEIR ACADEMIC FELLOWS:

Most of the professors conduct their review sessions before the beginning of finals. Hence go and join their review sessions for clarifying the things you are not cleared. This would also help you to ask your professors and seniors that how to attempt questions in the paper and what format should be adopted for attractive answers.

12. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF FEEDBACK FROM YOUR PROFESSORS:

If a professor says that I am going to give you feedback of what you timely write then go for it. It would help you to understand your weak areas and there would be enough time for you to improve your weaknesses before the grades are awarded.

13. ATTEND THE WORKSHOPS CONDUCTED BY THE ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT CENTER:

These workshops are conducted for covering topics like time and stress management, outlining, and how to prepare for law school exams.

14. TAKE PRACTICE EXAMS:

Find out all previous exam papers and try to solve them. Though, there are many books that contain answers of past papers yet try your best to attempt with your own thoughts. Once you are done with your answers, check them with the evaluated answers. It would help you understand what you lack in your answers and where you need to improvement. It is also recommended that if you attempt a past paper; get it evaluated from your professors.

15. CREATE A STUDY PLAN:

Most of the students say that they do not have enough time to prepare course outline, brief cases and for taking exams practice. They are wrong and misguided. If they had prepared their study plan in advance, they would not have faced any troublesome situation during their studies. Hence, create your study plan once you are enrolled for law degree.

16. DON’T WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE TO PREPARE YOUR LRW PAPERS:

This is not under graduate school. Legal writing takes too much time and unless you do not spend some time on writing and editing, you would not be able to perform in your LRW papers. Hence, you should start working on your LRW assignments as soon as possible.

17. REVIEW YOUR EXAMS:

Once the grades have been posted, go to your professors and ask them to review your exams. They will help you understand what your gray areas are and how you need to improve them.

18. MINIMIZE YOUR STRESS:

Though law schools are very stressful yet humor can help you to lessen it down. It is recommended that if you wish to get relieved from stress, try to eat healthy fruits, vegetables and juices. Remember, sleepless nights will be like adding fuel in the fire, however, must sleep minimum 7 to 8 hours in a night and do not work late nights. Besides, spend your free time with good friends for relaxing your mind and it is also a good way to down your stress.

19. DON’T GET CAUGHT UP IN THE COMPETITION ASPECT OF LAW SCHOOL:

Revolving in the competitive environment is a good way to emerge as a professional law student but must not be jealous from the talent of your class mates. Do you best during studies and leave the rest on God.

20. GET HELP IF YOU NEED IT:

When you need any sort of help, take it from your peers and seniors. Do not shy while seeking help from people. Unless you do not ask other what is the solution of your academic problems, how will you be able to learn in the law school?
